Barkerville: The Ghost Town That Refused to Die

0

Deep in British Columbia’s Cariboo region sits Barkerville—a town that should be a ghost town but isn’t. Founded in 1862 after Billy Barker struck gold, it swelled to 5,000 people at its peak.

Today, over 125 original buildings still stand. Costumed interpreters. Working saloons. Gold panning. Stagecoach rides. You can even stay overnight at the St. George Hotel.

50,000-60,000 visitors come every year. And every February? Dog teams still deliver mail by sled—real Canada Post mail stamped “Carried by Dog Team.”

This is Barkerville. The ghost town that refused to die.
